Linear Solenoids - Unlimited Applications

Electromagnets in the form of linear solenoids are also correctly called DC single solenoids. The linear solenoid is a universal solenoid in which the armature is moved from the initial position to the final position by the action of electromagnetic force. The return is effected by external forces. The solenoid can be designed for pulling and pushing forces.

How does a linear solenoid work?

In principle, all linear solenoids work according to the same basic principles of electromechanics, whereby electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy.

It consists of a coil wound around a hollow cylindrical tube containing a movable metal rod or armature. When electric current flows through the coil, a magnetic field is generated that attracts the metal rod or armature so that it moves in a linear direction. The magnitude of the movement is directly proportional to the strength of the electric current.

The linear solenoid can be designed for pulling and pushing forces. It has a very long service life due to the extremely precise bearing. Design and equipment offer universal application possibilities.

Properties & advantages of a linear solenoid

A linear solenoid has many different properties and, depending on the design, properties can be created which apply in combination with each other: A linear solenoid is characterised by the following properties:

  • high holding force which can be varied within limits
  • the maximum realisable switching numbers are only limited by the length of the pick-up and release times
  • low weight
  • can be designed for pulling and pushing forces.

Furthermore, linear solenoids have the following advantages:

  • Lifting solenoids usually have a fast reaction time and are therefore suitable for applications that require fast movement.
  • Solenoids are sensitive to temperature fluctuations and their performance can be affected by extreme temperatures.
  • Lifting solenoids have a long service life.
